Pain that feels like “metal filings under the skin”: Mary's patient story
My name is Mary and I like to think that I'm quite active for my 70 years of age. I am a bit less independent now since I was diagnosed with breast cancer seven months ago and I've moved in with my daughter. But, I still get out and about as much as possible and meet with friends for coffee and a chat.
My chemotherapy sometimes makes me feel ill and restricts what I can do. At the start of my chemotherapy, I developed shingles and even though the rash cleared up, I still get after-shingles pain. I have a feeling like metal filings under my skin. It is pulsating like waves that come and go. Sometimes the pain is so bad that brings tears to my eyes.
The pain affects the skin on my tummy so touching that area with clothing or bedding makes the pain worse. I sometimes feel tired and depressed because of it, but I always try to get on with things as best as I can.
My doctor just prescribed me a new treatment and we both look forward to the results.
